Title: Communication Director
The client is seeking a dynamic, experienced Communications Director to lead and implement an integrated communications engagement strategy for internal and external stakeholders, including a network of 200+ partners.
This position is ideal for someone who is passionate about improving lives and the health of communities and wants to be a part of a mission-driven organization that is rapidly evolving. We are looking for an experienced and motivated communications professional who is able to think big and creatively about the role communications plays in driving change and in driving business development opportunities.
You will work across disciplines, including media and press, social media, public-facing presentations, webinars, marketing collateral and other tools and resources to engage partners in building an integrated delivery system and amplifying the work of The clientand its partners. You will also work closely with the Development Director in communicating The client Health’s value proposition to pursue alternative funding streams, including grants, as well as in the pursuit of new business development opportunities.
You must be able to take an idea or project and develop and execute a communications strategy with limited direction or oversight, while proactively engaging colleagues, team members and partners.
In your first 3 months you will be:
Fully up to speed on the success of The clientto date, the network of partners and 2019 strategic priorities and projects
Understand The clientsbranding and communications guidelines
Develop a detailed understanding of the goals and impact of the DSRIP program to-date
Become familiar with The clientgovernance structures and goals
Develop a process for project managing new communications requests in conjunction with the Assistant Director of Media and Partner Engagement to
Develop a strategy to refresh The client Health’s communications across mixed medium, with a priority focus on press relations
Developed and begun implementing a press strategy for The clientwith contributions to the public policy arena
Take on day-to-day communications operations for The client
Contribute to a strategy of pursuing a DSRIP waiver extension and communicating the lasting legacy of The clientto-date
After six months you will have:
Re-launched The client Health’s communications strategy with the goals of successfully implementing a collective impact platform and increased buy-in for systems change from frontline and clinical staff
Grown The client Health’s social media and online presence by working with the Assistant Director of Media and Partner Engagement
Contributed to an increased level of partner engagement on The clientworkstream strategic priorities
Worked with the Chief Strategy Officer and Development Officer to spotlight partner organizations across various communications platforms
Developed a network of communications or appropriate leadership colleagues at partner organizations to regularly discuss and promote the success of The clientand its network
Supported grant applications through copy editing and original writing
The Communications Director reports directly to the The clientChief Strategy Officer. The Communications Director will work effectively and collaboratively with other The clientServices functional leads, The clientsleadership and communications teams, and the communications leadership of network organizations to coordinate and execute communications strategies. You will be a core member of The client Health’s team, working collaboratively across workstreams and leadership, internally and externally.
This role requires extensive knowledge of written, digital and online, and in-person communications platforms, as well as an understanding of health care delivery systems. The Communications Director will work closely with the The clientleadership and staff to ensure broad knowledge of The client Health’s initiatives, and provide recommendations, guidance, and support for all communications needs.
Core job responsibilities will include:
Successfully developing and leading complex communications and engagement programs that provide opportunities to link internal and external audiences’ needs and interests, with PPS programs and projects.
Writing multiple press releases, as well as statements, letters to editor, media alerts, OpEds and feature stories for employee newsletter.
Coordinating responses to incoming media inquiries and developing and leveraging relationships with press and media relations.
Identifying and packaging system-wide, as well as facility-specific, success stories and pitch to appropriate print, radio, TV, industry press – with particular focus on community or ethnic press outlets.
Collaborating with the Development Officer to successfully pursue grant and external business development and/or funding opportunities.
Assisting leadership in preparing for speaking engagements, media interviews, and public appearances.
Management of The client Health’s internal and external websites, in partnership with the Assistant Director of Media and Partner Engagement.
Reinforcing The client Health’s brand and communications standards, policies, and procedures.
Conducting ongoing research to evaluate audience attitudes and the effectiveness of the communications.
Remaining current with health care industry and policy trends and providing strategic recommendations that elevate and educate multiple audiences about The client Health’s role in New York City’s changing health care environment.
Remaining up-to-date on latest communication trends and strategies.
1. A Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Hospital Administration, Health Care Planning, Business Administration, Public Administration or an approved related program and five years of progressively responsible experience in health and medical service administration, public administration, personnel and labor relations, finance or appropriate functional discipline with an emphasis on planning, liaison and inter-organizational relationships, or related administrative or managerial functions; or,
2. A Baccalaureate Degree from an accredited college or university and seven years of progressively responsible experience in health and medical service administration, public administration, personnel and labor relations, finance or appropriate functional discipline with an emphasis on planning, liaison and inter-organizational relationships, or related administrative or managerial functions; or,
3. A satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
4. Department Preferences
Preference will be given to qualified applicants with:
BA degree, preferably in journalism, communications, or marketing; master’s degree highly preferred.
Strategic thinker with great judgment
Health care industry experience preferred but not required
5 – 7 years of experience in communications and 5+ years of experience in managing people and projects.
Experience managing press relations preferred but not required
Superb listening skills and ability to build trust quickly
A creative eye and command of best practices for print, video and on-line communications channels.
Demonstrated ability to work well with internal and external constituents, at every level of an organization.
Ability to prioritize responsibilities, handle multiple projects simultaneously and delegate responsibilities when appropriate.
Ability to work well under the pressure of deadlines and the stress of undertaking multiple projects at one time.
Ability to make complex decisions with imperfect information.
