Title: Application Specialist
Technical support: establishes ownership of technical support and training (including troubleshooting, correct operating procedures, selection based on application) on digital pathology products and technologies for customers such as pathologists in core labs, hospital pathology labs, researchers and vet labs.
Good communication and teaching skills are crucial, especially since the Application Specialist is expected to support all customers within the digital pathology market. Taking ownership of the problem until the issue is resolved is expected. Product knowledge and hands-on operational experience are key tools for completing this task. How results are measured: initiates support (takes the lead) in bringing solutions to move business forward. Conducts training in-person or remotely where needed, to ensure all expectations are met or exceeded. Reports findings within the organization.
Optimizes and tailors slide scanning to the approval of the pathology staff. Digital pathology customers require advanced technical support that goes beyond the actual product and will include detailed application knowledge. Detailed knowledge of the type of AP pathology slides as well as different types of samples is necessary to have meaningful discussions that are required at this level.
New product introductions: understand and be proficient in current and new product technologies and applications in the Digital Pathology (DP) environment. Provides suggestions for process or product improvements, new products, and promotion of sales/support methods.
As the product specialist or subject matter expert, the Application Specialist will participate in product release preparations. In many cases it will be similar to an existing product or an update/refresh of an existing product line. This can open up the technology to new applications, so understanding the differences will allow sales and marketing to highlight the important points and plan meetings with specific customers.
Understands new technologies, features, as well as operation. Requires good communication within the organization, as documentation will be sparse in the beginning. Collaborates with Marketing Engineers to help create material to educate sales staff. The purpose is to be well prepared to answer questions from our customers.
Product/application-specific testing and evaluation can take many forms: performs testing for proper operation and software compatibility on existing as well as prototype and beta release/pre-production products. Informs the product design group of any issues with product functionality. Shares the laboratory experimental results by clearly documenting setup and gathered data. Reports software issues to Software Engineering Group. Provides actual data and qualifies the specific technical design and specifications needed, requires extensive and detailed lab work (experiments and simulation). The Application Specialist will proactively create content, reports, presentations, and schedule training.
Coordinates and collaborates with Sales Management, Sales Engineers, Product Managers and Business Development Managers within the assigned geographic territory to understand, communicate, and manage current and projected territory sales objectives.
Tradeshows and conferences: represents Hamamatsu at conferences, trade shows and seminars as an industry technical expert. Conducts workshops, seminars, and collaborates with for technical presentations.
Maintaining a good working relationship with key leading researchers, pathologists, and scientists is the key to establishing as the global photonics leader. Attends conferences, gives talks, visits research facilities, collaborates on projects, and interacts with the community (including competitors) as the face of the company will establish long-term relationships critical to the growth of the company. Gives talks, presents posters, or otherwise participates in a conference as an application and technical expert.

Bachelor of Science, Biology or related
3-5 years digital pathology experience in clinical, research, or industrial setting with a practical focus on slide scanning
2-3 years customer support experience
Applicants must be able to travel domestically and internationally. Typical travel is around 50 – 75%. Must also have the ability to transport yourself to and from appointments.
1 year microscopy experience
Good communication and presentation skills
Intermediate knowledge of MS Office
Master of Science, Ph.D. in Biology
2 years technical support experience
2 years instrument trouble shooting experience
Digital pathology sales experience
